1. ระบบปฏิบัติการแบบเดี่ยว (stand-alone OS) เป็นระบบปฏิบัติการที่ใช้กับเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ทั่วไป มุ่งเน้นสำหรับผู้ใช้เพียงคนเดียว เช่น เครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ตามบ้าน ตามสำนักงาน ระบบปฏิบัติการไว้รองรับการทำงานบางอย่างเช่น พิมพ์รายงาน ดูหนังฟังเพลง เชื่อมต่ออินเตอร์เน็ต ปัจจุบันระบบปฏิบัติการนี้ได้พัฒนาให้มีคุณสมบัติที่เป็นเครื่องลูกข่ายเพื่อขอรับบริการจากเครื่องแม่ข่ายได้ด้วย
2. ระบบปฏิบัติการแบบเครือข่าย (network OS) เป็นระบบปฏิบัติการที่มุ่งเน้นให้บริการสำหรับผู้ใช้หลายๆคน (multi-user) ใช้สำหรับงานบริการและประมวลผลข้อมูลบนเครือข่ายคอมพิวเตอร์ มักจะให้ในองค์กรธุรกิจทั่วไป เครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ติดตั้งระบบปฏิบัติการพวกนี้เรียกว่า server สำหรับบริการข้อมูลต่างๆให้กับผู้ใช้
