มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์เปิดสอนหลักสูตรการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีและระดับบัณฑิตศึกษา โดยใช้ระบบการศึกษา (Educational System) ตามหลักสากล ซึ่งหลักสูตรการศึกษาปกติจำแนกเป็นหลักสูตร 4 ปี หลักสูตร 5 ปี (ได้แก่ หลักสูตรสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตรบัณฑิต และหลักสูตรศึกษาศาสตรบัณฑิต) และหลักสูตร 6 ปี (ได้แก่ หลักสูตรสัตวแพทยศาสตรบัณฑิต)
การแบ่งระยะเวลาการศึกษาเป็นทวิภาค (Semester System) คือ 1 ปีการศึกษา แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ภาคการศึกษา (Two Regular System) มีเวลาเรียนประมาณ 15 สัปดาห์ นอกจากนี้มหาวิทยาลัยฯ อาจเปิดการเรียนการสอนภาคฤดูร้อน ซึ่งเป็นภาคการศึกษาไม่บังคับได้ โดยใช้เวลาเรียนประมาณ 6 สัปดาห์ และจัดชั่วโมงเรียน (Summer Session) ให้เท่ากับภาคการศึกษาปกติ เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้นิสิตที่สนใจใคร่เรียนรู้ได้ศึกษาเพิ่มเติมด้วย
กำหนดเวลาเปิดการการศึกษา ดังนี้
ภาคต้น ระหว่างเดือน มิถุนายน-ตุลาคม

ภาคฤดูร้อน ระหว่างเดือน เมษายน-พฤษภาคม
การจัดการเรียนการสอนในรายวิชาเรียนเป็นหน่วยกิต (Credit System) มหาวิทยาลัยฯ จัดเนื้อหาวิชาที่จะสอนออกเป็นรายวิชา (Course) และกำหนดให้รายวิชาที่ใช้เวลาบรรยาย 1 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ในภาคเรียนปกติ ให้ถือว่ามีค่าเป็น 1 หน่วยกิต หรือรายวิชาที่ใช้เวลาเรียนในการปฏิบัติการทดลอง 2-3 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ในภาคเรียนปกติ มีค่าเป็น 1 หน่วยกิต ทั้งนี้ 1 ภาคการศึกษาจะใช้เวลาเรียนไม่น้อยกว่า 15 สัปดาห์ โดยผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาตามหลักสูตรปริญญาตรีของคณะใด จะได้รับปริญญาในสังกัดคณะนั้นตามที่สภามหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์อนุมัติ ซึ่งปริญญาแบ่งตามสายวิชาเป็น 10 ประเภท
