ผลจากการที่กระแสคลื่นไหลไปทางมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกตะวันออกทำให้เกิดความกดอากาศสูงเหนือมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกตะวันตกในพื้นที่บริเวณชายฝั่งออสเตรเลียอินโดนีเซียและเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ทำให้เกิดภาวะแห้งแล้งกว่าปกติ
