พล ตต. เจริญฤทธิ์ จำรัสโรมรัน รอง ผบ.ตำรวจตระเวนชายแดน ได้เล่าประวัติความเป็นมา ของเพลงพระราชนิพนธ์เพลงนี้ไว้ในหนังสือ "วารสารลูกเสือชาวบ้าน" ของ มานพ ลิ้มจรูญ ฉบับปฐมฤกษ์ ซึ่งผมขออนุญาตนำมาเผยแพร่ต่อว่า
เมื่อวันที่ ๒๕ มกราคม ๒๕๑๕ เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ และสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอฯ ได้เสด็จฯ ไปในงานพระราชพิธีสังเวยดวงวิญญาณอดีตมหาราช (สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช) ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงปฏิบัติเป็นประจำทุกปี สำหรับในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๕ นี้ ได้เสด็จฯ ไปที่ ต.แม่อาย อำเภอเชียงดาว จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ อันเป็นสถานที่ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ได้เสด็จฯ มาตั้งค่ายพักแรม ณ ที่นี้ก่อนยกทัพเข้าไปตีเมือง ซึ่งยังปรากฏร่องรอยรั้วป้อมค่ายต่างๆ อยู่ และในปัจจุบันนี้ รัฐบาลได้สร้างอนุสาวรีย์ของพระบาทสมเด็จนเรศวรมหาราชทรงช้างต้น และได้จำลองค่ายที่ประทับแรมจินตนาการ และร่องรอยที่ปรากฏอยู่ตามสภาพจริง
หลังจากเสร็จพระราชพิธี เมื่อ ๒๕ มกราคม ๒๕๑๕ แล้วเสด็จฯ กลับประทับแรม ณ พระตำหนักภูพิงค์ราชนิเวศน์ ในคืนนั้น ก่อนรุ่งสว่าง สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้ทรงสุบินนิมิตว่า สมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราชได้เสด็จฯ มาปรากฏพระองค์ขึ้น ที่หน้าพระแท่นบรรทม ในพระสุบินนิมิต สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้กราบถวายบังคม โดยที่ทรงทราบจาก พระวรกายและฉลองพระองค์ทรงเครื่องออกศึกว่า คือ องค์พระนเรศวรมหาราช และได้มีกระแสพระดำรัส แก่สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถว่า พระองค์ท่านปัจจุบันนี้ ดวงพระวิญญาณยังอยู่ในประเทศไทย เพราะทรงเป็นห่วงบ้านเมือง ประชาชนคนไทย ยังไม่ได้ไปประสูติใหม่ ณ ที่ใดเลย และที่มาปรากฏในสุบินนิมิตนี้ ก็เพื่อจะทรงเตือนว่า ในอนาคตต่อจากนี้ไป บ้านเมืองไทยจะประสบกับความวุ่นวายยุ่งยาก และความมืดมนยิ่งขึ้น อย่างน่ากลัวอันตราย เหมือนกับที่เกิดขึ้นในสมัยพระองค์ท่าน (อนาคตนั้นก็น่าจะเป็น สมัยปัจจุบันนี้เอง -webmaster) ขอให้สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงเป็นกำลังพระทัยถวาย แด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวองค์ปัจจุบัน เพื่อที่จะได้ทรงนำประชาชน และชาติไทยฝ่าฟันอุปสรรคทั้งปวง ให้ผ่านพ้นไปได้ และพระองค์ทรงพิจารณาแล้วเห็นว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวองค์ปัจจุบัน จักเป็นผู้นำให้ชาติไทยและประชาชนชาวไทย ผ่านพ้นห้วงวิกฤตินี้อย่างแน่นอน และพระองค์ท่านจะเสด็จฯ ติดตามช่วยเหลืออยู่ตลอดไป และขอให้ทั้งสองพระองค์ ได้ทรงให้กำลังใจแก่ประชาชนชาวไทยส่วนใหญ่ ที่เขาเหล่านั้น ไม่มีโอกาสเข้าใกล้ถวายงานโดยใกล้ชิด แต่เป็นประชาชนที่ยึดมั่นในพระองค์ท่าน โดยไม่เคยแสดงตัวออกมาให้ปรากฏ เหมือนกับการทำบุญปิดทองหลังองค์พระปฏิมา และเขาเหล่านั้นพร้อมที่จะถวายชีวิต เพื่อพระองค์ท่านและชาติไทย จึงทรงขอให้รวบรวมชาวไทยผู้รักชาติเหล่านั้น และสนับสนุนให้เขาได้มีกำลังใจเพื่อรักษาชาติบ้านเมืองไว้
