พระราชประวัติ
พระนามเดิมของพระองค์ เดิมว่า สมเด็จ พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้าวชิราลงกรณ บรมจักรยาดิศรสันตติวงศ เทเวศรธำรง สุบริบาล อภิคุณูประการมหิตลาดุลเดช ภูมิพลนเรศวรางกูร กิตติสิริสมบูรณ์สวางควัฒน์ บรมขัตติยราชกุมาร ซึ่งเป็นพระราชโอรสเพียงพระองค์เดียว ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ พระองค์ทรงพระราชสมภพ เมื่อวันจันทร์ที่ 28 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2495 เมื่อเวลา 17 นาฬิกา 45 นาที ณ พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน พระราชวังดุสิต
พระราชพิธีสมโภชเดือน
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดพระราชพิธีสมโภชเดือนขึ้นพระอู่ขึ้น ณ พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน พระราชวังดุสิต ในวันที่ 15 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2495โดยสมเด็จพระวชิรญาณวงศ์ สมเด็จพระสังฆราชเจ้าทรงเป็นประธานเจริญพระพุทธมนต์ในเย็นวันที่ 14 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2495 เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น (15 กันยายน) พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงวางพระราชภัณฑ์ลงในพระอู่ตามพระราชประเพณี แล้ว พระมหาราชครูเชิญสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้าวชิราลงกรณ ฯ ขึ้นพระอู่แล้ว พระบรมวงศานุวงศ์และข้าทูลละอองธุลีพระบาทเวียนเทียนครบรอบตามประเพณี สภาวัฒนธรรมแห่งชาติได้จัดขับไม้มโหรีขับกล่อมถวายพระพรในวาระนี้ด้วย ในการนี้มีการถ่ายทอดเสียงในพระราชพิธีทางวิทยุไปทั่วประเทศ

พระราชภารกิจด้านการศึกษา
พระองค์ทรงสำเร็จการศึกษาขั้นต้นในโรงเรียนจิตรลดา แล้วจึงเสด็จศึกษาต่อที่โรงเรียนคิงส์มีด ที่แคว้นซัสเซกส์ และโรงเรียนมิลฟิลด์ แคว้นซอมเมอร์เซท ที่ประเทศอังกฤษ จากนั้นพระองค์ได้ศึกษาต่อที่โรงเรียนคิงส์สกูล ซิดนีย์ และสำเร็จการศึกษาจากวิทยาลัยการทหารดันทรูน แคนเบอร์รา ประเทศออสเตรเลีย
ภายหลังการเสด็จกลับมาประเทศไทย ทรงรับราชการทหารและ ศึกษาต่อในโรงเรียนเสนาธิการทหารบก รุ่นที่ 46 พ.ศ. 2520 และทรงผนวช เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2521 จากนั้นพระองค์ทรงศึกษาที่คณะนิติศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยสุโขทัยธรรมาธิราช รุ่นที่ 2 เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2525 และหลักสูตรวิทยาลัยป้องกันราชอาณาจักร จากประเทศอังกฤษ เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2533 ทั้งนี้พระองค์ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นพลเอกสามเหล่าทัพด้วยกัน ได้แก่ พลเอกกองทัพบกไทย พลเรือเอกกองทัพเรือไทย และพลอากาศเอกแห่งกองทัพอากาศไทย
ด้านการบิน

สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปเยี่ยมที่ตั้งกองทหารหน่วยต่าง ๆ อยู่เสมอ จากการที่ได้ทรงศึกษาด้านวิชาทหารมานาน ทรงมีความรู้เชี่ยวชาญอย่างมาก และได้พระราชทานความรู้เหล่านั้นให้แก่ทหาร 3 เหล่าทัพ
ทรงปฏิบัติพระองค์เป็นแบบอย่างแก่นายทหาร เอาพระทัยใส่ในความเป็นอยู่ทุกข์สุขของทหารผู้อยู่ใต้บังคับบัญชาอย่างทั่วถึง รวมทั้งพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ เป็นทุนการศึกษาแก่บุตรของทหาร สิ่งเหล่านี้ล้วนก่อให้เกิดความเทิดทูนและความจงรักภักดีแก่เหล่าทหารเป็นอย่างยิ่ง
ด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุข
สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ทรงโปรดให้สร้าง โรงพยาบาลสมเด็จพระยุพราช ขึ้น เพื่อให้การรักษาพยาบาลผู้เจ็บป่วยในถิ่นทุรกันดาร พระองค์ทรงเป็นองค์นายกกิตติมศักดิ์ของมูลนิธิโรงพยาบาลสมเด็จพระยุพราช พระองค์ทรงมีพระราชปณิธานให้เอาใจใส่รักษาพยาบาลพสกนิกรของพระองค์ให้ปลอดภัยจากความเจ็บไข้โดยทั่วหน้าเสมอกัน
ด้านศาสนา
สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ ทรงแสดงพระองค์เป็นพุทธมามกะที่ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม เมื่อวันที่ 3 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2509 ก่อนเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงศึกษาต่อที่ประเทศอังกฤษ
นอกจากนี้ สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ มีพระราชศรัทธาออกบวชในพระพุทธศาสนา โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชโปรดให้จัดการพระราชพิธีผนวช ณ พัทธสีมาวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม ในวันที่ 6 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2521 โดยมีสมเด็จพระอริยวงศาคตญาณ (วาสนมหาเถร) เป็นพระราชอุปัธยาจารย์ ได้รับถวายพระสมณนามว่า “วชิราลงฺกรโณ” และได้ประทับอยู่ ณ วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร ตลอดจนทรงลาสิกขาในวันที่ 20 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2521
