ความหมายของวันขึ้นปีใหม่ ตามพจนานุกรม ฉบับราชตบัณฑิตยสถาน ให้ความหมายของคำว่า " ปี" ไว้ดังนี้ ปี หมายถึง เวลา ชั่วโลกโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์ครั้งหนึ่งราว 365 วัน : เวลา 12 เดือนตามสุริยคติ



ประวัติความเป็นมา

วันปีใหม่ มีประวัติความเป็นมาซึ่งเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามยุคสมัยและความเหมาะสม ตั้งแต่ในสมัยเริ่มแรกเมื่อชาวบาบิโลเนียเริ่มคิดค้นการใช้ปฏิทิน โดยอาศัยระยะต่าง ๆ ของดวงจันทร์เป็นหลักในการนับ เมื่อครบ 12 เดือนก็กำหนดว่าเป็น 1 ปี และเพื่อให้เกิดความพอดีระหว่างการนับปีตามปฏิทินกับปีตามฤดูกาล จึงได้เพิ่มเดือนเข้าไปอีก 1 เดือน เป็น 13 เดือนในทุก 4 ปี

ต่อมาชาวอียิปต์ กรีก และชาวเซมิติค ได้นำปฏิทินของชาวบาบิโลเนียมาดัดแปลงแก้ไข อีกหลายคราวเพื่อให้ตรงกับฤดูกาลมากยิ่งขึ้นจนถึงสมัยของกษัตริย์จูเลียต ซีซาร์ ได้นำความคิดของนักดาราศาสตร์ชาวอียิปต์ชื่อ โยซิเยนิส มาปรับปรุง ให้ปีหนึ่งมี 365 วัน ในทุก ๆ 4 ปี ให้เติมเดือนที่มี 28 วัน เพิ่มขึ้นอีก 1 วัน เป็น 29 วัน คือเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ เรียกว่า อธิกสุรทิน

เมื่อเพิ่มในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์มี 29 วันในทุก ๆ 4 ปี แต่วันในปฏิทินก็ยังไม่ค่อยตรงกับฤดูกาลนัก คือเวลาในปฏิทินยาวกว่าปีตามฤดูกาล เป็นเหตุให้ฤดูกาลมาถึงก่อนวันในปฏิทิน

และในวันที่ 21 มีนาคมตามปีปฏิทินของทุก ๆ ปี จะเป็นช่วงที่มีเวลากลางวันและกลางคืนเท่ากัน คือเป็นวันที่ดวงอาทิตย์จะขึ้นตรงทิศตะวันออก และลับลงตรงทิศตะวันตกเป๋ง วันนี้ทั่วโลกจึงมีช่วงเวลาเท่ากับ 12 ชั่วโมง เท่ากัน เรียกว่า วันทิวาราตรีเสมอภาคมีนาคม (Equinox in March)

ความเป็นมาของ วันขึ้นปีใหม่ไทย
ในอดีต วันขึ้นปีใหม่ของไทยได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงมาแล้ว 4 ครั้งคือ ครั้งแรกถือเอาวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือนอ้าย เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ซึ่ง ตรงกับเดือนมกราคม ครั้งที่ 2 กำหนดให้วันขึ้นปีใหม่ตรงกับวันขึ้น 1 ค่ำ เดือน 5 ตามคติพราหมณ์ ซึ่งตรงกับเดือนเมษายน
การกำหนดวันขึ้นปีใหม่ใน 2 ครั้งนี้ ถือเอาทางจันทรคติเป็นหลัก ต่อมาได้ถือเอาทางสุริยคติแทน โดยกำหนดให้วันที่ 1 เมษายน เป็นวันขึ้นปีใหม่ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2432 เป็นต้นมา อย่างไรก็ตาม ประชาชนส่วนใหญ่โดยเฉพาะตามชนบทยังคงยึดถือเอาวันสงกรานต์เป็น วันขึ้นปีใหม่อยู่ ต่อมาเมื่อมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองมาเป็นระบอบประชาธิปไตย ทางราชการเห็นว่าวันขึ้นปีใหม่วันที่ 1 เมษายน ไม่สู้จะมีการรื่นเริงอะไรมากนัก สมควรที่จะฟื้นฟูขึ้นมาใหม่ จึงได้ประกาศให้มีงานรื่นเริงวันขึ้นปีใหม่ในวันที่ 1 เมษายน 2477 ขึ้นใน กรุงเทพฯเป็นครั้งแรก

การจัดงานวันขึ้นปีใหม่ที่ได้เริ่มเมื่อวันที่ 1 เมษายน ได้แพร่หลายออกไปต่างจังหวัดในปีต่อๆมา และในปี พ.ศ.2479 ก็ได้มีการ จัดงานรื่นเริงปีใหม่ทั่วทุกจังหวัด วันขึ้นปีใหม่วันที่ 1 เมษายน ในสมัยนั้นทางราชการเรียกว่า วันตรุษสงกรานต์

ต่อมาได้มีการพิจารณาเปลี่ยนวันขึ้นปีใหม่อีกครั้งหนึ่ง โดยคณะรัฐมนตรีได้แต่งตั้งคณะกรรมการขึ้น ซึ่งมีหลวงวิจิตรวาทการ เป็นประธานกรรมการ ที่ประชุมมีมติเป็นเอกฉันท์ให้เปลี่ยนวันขึ้นปีใหม่เป็นวันที่ 1 มกราคม โดยกำหนดให้วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2484 เป็น วันขึ้นปีใหม่เป็นต้นไป

เหตุผลที่ทางราชการได้เปลี่ยนวันขึ้นปีใหม่จากวันที่ 1 เมษายนมาเป็นวันที่ 1 มกราคม ก็คือ
1. ไม่ขัดกับพุทธศาสนาในด้านการนับวัน เดือน และการร่วมฉลองปีใหม่ด้วยการทำบุญ
2. เป็นการเลิกวิธีนำเอาลัทธิพราหมณ์มาคร่อมพระพุทธศาสนา
3. ทำให้เข้าสู่ระดับสากลที่ใช้อยู่ในประเทศทั่วโลก
4. เป็นการฟื้นฟูวัฒนธรรม คตินิยม และจารีตประเพณีของชาติไทย

กิจกรรมที่ชาวไทยส่วนใหญ่มักจะยึดถือปฏิบัติในวันขึ้นปีใหม่ได้แก่
1. การทำบุญตักบาตร โดยอาจตักบาตรที่บ้าน หรือไปที่วัดหรือตามสถานที่ต่างๆที่ทางราชการเชิญชวนไปร่วมทำบุญ
2. การกราบขอพรจากผู้ใหญ่ และอวยพรเพื่อนฝูง การมอบของขวัญ การมอบช่อดอกไม้ หรือการส่งบัตรอวยพร
3. การจัดงานรื่นเริง การจัดเลี้ยงในหมู่เพื่อนฝูง ญาติพี่น้องหรือตามหน่วยงานต่างๆ
วันขึ้นปีใหม่นับเป็นโอกาสดีที่จะทำให้เราได้ทบทวนถึงการดำเนินชีวิตในอดีต เพื่อจะได้แก้ไขข้อบกพร่องที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตให้ดีขึ้น

กิจกรรมใน วันขึ้นปีใหม่
