The stingless bee (Apidae, Meliponini) is a highly social bee that is
found in tropical and subtropical areas (James, 2004). Stingless bees
store their honey in pots made of cerumen, a mixture of wax and
propolis (Vit et al., 1994). According to Thai traditional knowledge,
villagers keep stingless bees for propolis, fruit pollination and some
parts for honey consumption. In particular, in Chantaburi and Trat
provinces in the eastern part of Thailand, for commercial honey
production the beekeepers not only keep the honey bee (Apis
mellifera) but also the stingless bee (Tetragonula laeviceps )
(common name in thai: “Chan-na-rong”).
