จัดในวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๖ (เดือน ๘ เหนือ) ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า ประเพณีแปดเป็ง

ความสำคัญ

ประเพณีสรงน้ำพระธาตุหริภุญชัยจัดขึ้นทุกปี เพราะถือว่าพระธาตุหริภุญชัยเป็นพระธาตุเจดีย์ที่สำคัญหนึ่งในแปดพระธาตุเจดีย์ของประเทศไทย น้ำที่นำมาสรงองค์พระธาตุนั้นเป็นน้ำสรงพระราชทาน น้ำทิพย์จากดอยขะม้อ และน้ำสรงของประชาชน
วัตถุประสงค์ของประเพณีสรงน้ำพระธาตุหริภุญชัย มีดังนี้
๑. เพื่อเป็นการสักการะพระบรมธาตุ ซึ่งเป็นปูชนียสถานอันเก่าแก่ และนับเป็นโบราณสถานที่สำคัญของจังหวัดลำพูนและชาวพุทธทั่วไป
๒. เพื่อสักการะพระบรมอัฐิธาตุของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า เพื่อเป็นการบูชาเสาหลักเมือง เพราะชาวลำพูนถือว่า เจดีย์พระธาตุหริภุญชัยเป็นเสาหลักเมือง เมื่อสรงน้ำพระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัยจึงได้ทำบุญเสาหลักเมืองลำพูนด้วย

พิธีกรรม

ในวันขึ้น ๑๓ ค่ำ จะมีพิธีฝังเสาสำหรับผูกเชือกดึงหม้อน้ำสรง ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า เสาก๊างน้ำ ในวันนี้ฝนมักจะตก ชาวบ้านจึงเชื่อกันว่า หลังจากฝังเสาก๊างน้ำแล้ว เทวดาจะต้องสรงน้ำพระธาตุก่อนใคร เมื่อเสร็จงานเรียบร้อยแล้ว เสาก๊างน้ำจะถอดเก็บรักษาไว้
ตอนบ่ายวันขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ ราว ๑๓.๐๐ น. ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดพร้อมด้วยข้าราชการ นักเรียน นักศึกษาประชาชน ร่วมขบวนแห่นำน้ำสรงพระราชทาน พร้อมเครื่องสักการะบูชาและน้ำทิพย์ดอยขะม้อ ไปยังวัดพระธาตุหริภุญชัยวรมหาวิหาร แล้วทำพิธีถวายสักการะ โดยคณะสงฆ์ชั้นผู้ใหญ่ มีเจ้าอาวาสวัดพระธาตุหริภุญชัยเป็นประธานนำสวดถวายอดิเรก หลังจากนั้นผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดลำพูน จะทำพิธีสรงน้ำพระธาตุโดยสรงน้ำพระราชทานก่อน ต่อจากนั้นประชาชนจึงเข้าสรงน้ำ เมื่อน้ำสรงเมื่อเต็มหม้อแล้ว ประชาชนจะช่วยกันดึงเชือกให้หม้อน้ำสรงเลื่อนขึ้นไปยังองค์พระธาตุ ซึ่งบนองค์พระธาตุ มีชายแต่งตัวชุดขาวคล้ายพราหมณ์ประมาณ ๕-๖ คน คอยรับน้ำสรง เพื่อนำไปสรงรอบๆองค์พระธาตุ ประชาชนจะสรงน้ำกันอย่างไม่ขาดสายจนถึงเวลาประมาณ ๑๗.๐๐ น. เป็นอันเสร็จพิธี

ประเพณีนี้แสดงถึงความยึดมั่นในพระพุทธศาสนาและพระคุณขององค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเป็นสรณะของประชาชน ด้วยการแสดงคารวะต่อพระบรมสารีริกธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้า นอกจากนี้ยังแสดงถึงความร่วมมือร่วมใจของคนในครอบครัวและชุมชน มาร่วมสักการะบูชาองค์พระธาตุร่วมกัน พร้อมกับแสดงความยินดีปรีดา ด้วยการแสดงตีกลองหลวง ฟ้อนพื้นเมือง แห่ครัวทานเพื่อนมัสการและสักการะพระบรมธาตุ
