      4.2 โครงการเรือหลวงช้าง รักษ์ทะเลตราด
    กองทัพเรือได้ปลดประจำการ “เรือหลวงช้าง” แล้วส่งมอบให้จังหวัดตราด ภายใต้งบประมาณจากองค์การบริหารการพัฒนาพื้นที่พิเศษเพื่อการท่องเที่ยวอย่างยั่งยืน (อพท.) เพื่อนำไปดำเนินการสร้างแหล่งท่องเที่ยวโลกใต้ทะเลแห่งใหม่ เป็นปะการังเทียม จะได้เป็นแหล่งหลบภัย แพร่ ขยายพันธุ์สัตว์ทะเลและเป็นแหล่งอาหารของมนุษย์
    เรือหลวงช้าง เป็นเรือที่สหรัฐอเมริกาสร้างขึ้นเพื่อใช้ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ ๒ ได้มอบให้กับกองทัพเรือไทย  หลังเสร็จสิ้นภารกิจขนยุทโธปกรณ์ในสงครามเกาหลี และขึ้นทะเบียนในราชนาวีไทยในนามของ  “เรือหลวงช้าง” หมายเลข ๗๑๒ เมื่อ พ.ศ.๒๕๐๕ ชื่อเรือหลวงช้างที่ราชนาวีไทยตั้งขึ้นนี้ หมายถึง เกาะช้างจังหวัดตราด นั่นเอง  ตามหลักการการตั้งชื่อเรือของกองทัพเรือจะมีการคัดเลือกชื่อ  มาจากชื่อเกาะต่าง ๆ ที่มีความสำคัญ ซึ่งเกาะช้างของเราก็ได้รับเกียรติในการประทับชื่อบนเรือลำนี้
    เรือหลวงช้าง ได้ปฏิบัติการยุทธสำคัญหลายภารกิจของชาติไทย รวมทั้งเป็นเรือฝึกให้กับนายทหารเรือเกือบทั้งกองทัพเรืออีกด้วย เรือหลวงช้างถูกปลดระวางในปี พ.ศ.๒๕๔๘ มีขนาดกว้าง ๑๕ เมตร ยาว ๑๐๐ เมตร และสูง ๒๖ เมตร  หลังปลดระวางแล้วจะถูกเรียกว่า “เรือช้าง” ซึ่งได้ถูกนำไปจอดไว้ที่อู่ทหารเรือพระจุลจอมเกล้า ตำบลแหลมฟ้าผ่า อำเภอพระสุมทรเจดีย์ จังหวัดสมุทรปราการ
    ปี พ.ศ.๒๕๕๕ จังหวัดตราดได้ประสานงานกับกองทัพเรือ เพื่อขอนำเรือช้างมาทำประโยชน์โดยการวางลงใต้ทะเล  เพื่อให้เป็นบ้านปลาและที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์ทะเลทุกชนิดภายใต้โครงการ “เรือหลวงช้างรักษ์ทะเลตราด” เพื่อร่วมเทิดพระเกียรติ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ในวโรกาสปีมหามงคลเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา ๘๐ พรรษา บริเวณหินลูกบาตรตำบลเกาะช้างใต้ หมู่เกาะช้างใกล้ ๆ กับเกาะคุ้ม  ความลึกในการวางเรืออยู่ที่ ๓๓ – ๓๕ เมตร
    จุดวางปะการังเทียมทั้งสองโครงการดังกล่าว  นับเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวสำคัญสำหรับนักดำน้ำชมปะการังและสัตว์ใต้ทะเลในท้องที่จังหวัดตราด
5. แหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ และป่าชายเลน  ได้แก่ 
หาดทรายดำ ตั้งอยู่ในอำเภอแหลมงอบ ในพื้นที่ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติ ป่าแหลมมะขาม นับเป็นหาดทรายดำ  แห่งเดียวในประเทศไทย และ ๑ ใน ๕ แห่งของโลก เดิมชาวบ้านเรียกหาดนี้ว่า หาดหัวสวน  ชาวบ้านในพื้นที่มีความเชื่อว่า หากใครได้มานั่งหมกตัวในทรายดำจะสามารถรักษาโรคได้ เสียงบอกต่อในเรื่องนี้ทำให้คนในพื้นที่และนักท่องเที่ยวเดินทางเข้ามาเที่ยวที่หาดทรายดำมากขึ้นเพื่อหวังที่จะช่วยรักษาโรค แต่หลังจากนั้น  มีหน่วยงานทางการแพทย์เข้ามายืนยันว่า ทรายดำไม่สามารถรักษาโรคได้ตามที่ได้กล่าวอ้าง ทำให้ผู้คนเดินทาง เข้ามาหาดทรายดำน้อยลง ปัจจุบันหาดทรายดำมีสภาพแวดล้อมของป่าชายเลนในเส้นทางศึกษาธรรมชาติที่สมบูรณ์ อุดมด้วยพันธุ์ไม้นานาชนิด ผู้มาเยือนจะได้ชมความงามของพันธุ์ไม้ป่าชายเลนน้ำเค็มที่มีความผิดแปลกจากป่าชายเลนทั่วไป
ศูนย์เรียนรู้ชุมชนบ้านเปร็ดใน ตำบลห้วงน้ำขาว อำเภอเมือง เป็นชุมชนที่มีการดูแลรักษาพื้นที่ป่าชายเลนธรรมชาติมากถึง ๑๒,๐๐๐ ไร่ เหมาะสำหรับการศึกษาอนุรักษ์ชมธรรมชาติป่าชายเลน และปลูกป่าทดแทน
ศูนย์การเรียนรู้และพัฒนาทรัพยากรป่าชายเลนที่ ๑ บ้านด่านเก่า ตำบลวังกระแจะ อำเภอเมืองเป็นศูนย์ที่อยู่ใกล้ตัวเมืองมากที่สุด ประมาณ ๕ กิโลเมตร เหมาะแก่การศึกษาเส้นทางธรรมชาติป่าชายเลนการเดินทางสะดวก นอกจากนี้ยังสามารถชมหิ่งห้อยได้
