การฟื้นฟูทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวพระราชทานแนวพระราชดำริริเริ่ม “โครงการหลวง” ในการพัฒนาและวิจัย พร้อมทั้งพระราชทานทุนการศึกษาแก่นักเรียนไทยไปศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศ เพื่อนำกลับมาพัฒนาประเทศ โดยทรงมีพระราชดำริให้มีการอนุรักษ์พร้อมกับการฟื้นฟูทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม

เมื่อพุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๘ พระบามสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงประทับแรมกลางป่าในคราวเสด็จเยี่ยมราษฎรในพื้นที่ทางภาคเหนือ ได้เสด็จเยี่ยมชาวเขาในหมู่บ้านต่างๆ ของภาคเหนือที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ทอดพระเนตรเห็นสภาพความเป็นอยู่อันยากลำบากของชาวเขา รวมทั้งสภาพป่าที่ถูกทำลาย อันจะส่งผลต่อไปยังสภาพต้นน้ำลำธารของประเทศ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงสนับสนุนให้มีการวิจัยไม้เมืองหนาว เพื่อช่วยให้ชาวเขาเลิกปลูกฝิ่น หันมาปลูกพืชที่ทำการวิจัยแทน ทั้งยังเป็นการเปลี่ยนวิธีการปลูกพืชที่ต้องถางป่าทำลายหน้าดิน ให้เป็นวิธีการปลูกที่ถูกต้องเหมาะสม โดยมีผู้เชียวชาญทางด้านเกษตรกรรมให้คำแนะนำแก่ชาวเขาอย่างใกล้ชิด
ปัจจุบัน เวลาที่ผ่านมากว่า ๓๐ ปี ของโครงการหลวงฯ ได้สร้างชีวิตใหม่และทำให้คนไทยกลุ่มหนึ่งมีอาชีพและมีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ดี กว่าเดิม อย่างเห็นได้ชัด มีป่าไม้ และต้นน้ำลำธารเป็นแหล่งชีวิตต่อไปอีกนานเท่านาน


มลพิษทางอากาศ
ในปัจจุบัน มีปัจจัยหลายประการ ที่ทำให้ปริมาณก็าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ และคาร์บอนมอนออกไซด์ ในบรรยากาศมากเกินไป จนเกิดความไม่สมดุลของอากาศขึ้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีพระราชดำรัสให้นักวิชาการป่าไม้ช่วยกันวิจัยเสาะแสวงหาพันธุ์พืชที่สามารถคายก๊าซออกซิเจนจากขบวนการสังเคราะห์แสงออกมาในอัตราสูง ซึ่งหากเมื่อพบแล้วจะได้ใช้ไม้ดังกล่าวในกิจการปลูก ซึ่งจะก่อให้เกิดความสมดุลของปริมาณก๊าซออกซิเจน ไนโตรเจน และคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ในบรรยากาศต่อไป

ทรัพยากรน้ำ
น้ำ เป็น ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่สำคัญในการดำรงชีพของมนุษย์อีกอย่างหนึ่ง ปัจจุบันมักเกิดอุทกภัยในฤดูฝน และเกิดภาวะขาดแคลนน้ำในฤดูแล้ง ทำให้ประชาชนเดือดร้อนทั้งใน 2 กรณี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงทราบดีว่า การที่ฝนไม่ตกต้องตามฤดูกาล หรือเมื่อมีฝนตกมาแล้วไม่สามารถเก็บกักน้ำไว้ได้ จนเกิดภาวะน้ำป่าไหลหลากท่วมบ้านเรือนและพื้นที่การเกษตรนั้น มีสาเหตุมาจาก การบุกรุกทำลายป่า เพื่อเอาพื้นที่ไปใช้ทำการเกษตรโดยขาดความรู้ในการอนุรักษ์น้ำและดิน หรือเกิดจากการที่ ชาวบ้านตัดไม้ไปขายให้กับนายทุน โดยรู้เท่าไม่ถึงการณ์ จึงเป็นผลให้ป่าไม้ ต้นน้ำลำธารถูกทำลายลงเป็นจำนวนมาก
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงแก้ไข โดยนำโครงการตามพระราชดำริต่างๆ เข้าไปดำเนินการ เพื่อหยุดยั้ง การบุกรุกทำลายป่า อาทิ โครงการหลวงพัฒนาชาวเขา โครงการอนุรักษ์ป่าไม้ต้นน้ำลำธาร โครงการปลูกป่าทดแทน และโครงการอาชีพเสริม เป็นต้น ปรากฏว่า หลังจากที่ได้ทรงดำเนินโครงการเหล่านี้ไปแล้ว ราษฎรที่เป็นชาวไทยภูเขา และชาวไทยพื้นราบได้ลดการบุกรุกทำลายป่า ซึ่งหากเป็นเช่นนี้ไปเรื่อยๆ ปัญหาเกี่ยวกับการทำลายป่าจะหมดไปในที่สุด

ปัญหาน้ำเสีย
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงให้ความสนพระทัยในปัญหาน้ำเน่าเสีย ทรงพยายามหาทางที่จะบรรเทาสภาพน้ำเสีย โดยได้ทรงคิดค้นแบบเครื่องกล ที่จะนำมาใช้บำบัดน้ำเสียขึ้น แล้วพระราชทานแบบให้ กรมชลประทานนำไปทดลองประดิษฐ์ขึ้น เรียกว่า “เครื่องกังหันน้ำชัยพัฒนา” หลังจากที่ได้นำเครื่องดังกล่าว ไปทดสอบ ปรากฏผลดีเป็นที่น่าพอใจ และได้รับการจดลิขสิทธิ์ และการรับรอง จากทั่วโลกว่าเป็น เครื่องกลที่มีประสิทธิภาพดีเยี่ยม จนได้รับการถวายรางวัลเครื่องประดิษฐ์ดีเด่น จากคณะกรรมการสภาวิจัย แห่งชาติประจำปี 2536

ทรัพยากรสัตว์ป่า
