ประวัติกีฬาว่ายน้ำในประเทศไทย

สมาคมว่ายน้ำสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย ได้จดทะเบียนสมาคมต่อกรมตำรวจเมื่อวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2502 ผู้ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกสมาคมว่ายน้ำฯคนแรกคือ พลเรือโท สวัสดิ์ ภูติอนันต์ ร.น. ในปีเดียวกันนี้สมาคมว่ายน้ำฯได้เข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ว่ายน้ำนานาชาติในปี พ.ศ. 2504 รัฐบาลได้อนุมัติเงินงบประมาณจำนวน 10 ล้านบาท เพื่อก่อสร้างสระว่ายน้ำมาตรฐานขนาดความยาว 50 เมตร กว้าง 25 เมตร พร้อมทั้งที่กระโดดน้ำ และอัฒจันทร์คนดูจำนวน 5,000 ที่นั่ง ณ บริเวณสนามกีฬาแห่งชาติ และเปิดใช้ในการแข่งขัน เมื่อวันที่ 25 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2506 เรียกว่า สระว่ายน้ำโอลิมปิก (ปัจจุบันได้เปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นสระว่ายน้ำวิสุทธารามย์) และสมาคมว่ายน้ำสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย ได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ว่ายน้ำแห่งเอเชียในปี พ.ศ. 2509

ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 สมาคมว่ายน้ำสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “สมาคมว่ายน้ำแห่งประเทศไทย” ชื่อย่อ ส.ว.ท. ชื่อภาษาอังกฤษ THAILAND SWIMMING ASSOCIATION ชื่อย่อ AST สมาคมว่ายน้ำแห่งประเทศไทย ( ส.ว.ท. ) เป็นผู้ส่งเสริมสนับสนุนการเล่นกีฬาว่ายน้ำ กระโดดน้ำ โปโลน้ำ และระบำใต้น้ำ

ปัจจุบันกีฬาว่ายน้ำในประเทศไทยได้รับความสนใจจากประชาชนมากยิ่งขึ้น ประกอบกับกระทรวงศึกษาธิการได้บรรจุกีฬาว่ายน้ำไว้ในหลักสูตรเกือบทุกระดับ มีการจัดกิจกรรมการแข่งขันตลอดทั้งปี บรรจุลงในการแข่งขันระดับประเทศ คือ กีฬานักเรียนนักศึกษาแห่งชาติ กีฬาเยาวชนแห่งชาติ กีฬาแห่งชาติ กีฬาชิงแชมป์ประเทศไทยทั้งสระ 50 เมตร สระ 25 เมตร

ส่วนระดับนาๆชาติก็มีการจัดการแข่งขันในระดับ ซีเกมส์ เอเชียเกมส์ โอลิมปิค ชิงแชมป์โลกทั้งสระ 50 เมตร สระ 25 เมตร ระดับเยาวชนก็มีรายการซีเอจกรุ๊ป เอเชียเอจกรุ๊ป กีฬาว่ายน้ำนักเรียนอาเซียนเป็นต้น
